Wat
Arun (Temple of Dawn) The
Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun is name after the Indian god of dawn,
Aruna., and palace as it was the first place in Thonburi to catch the
morning light. It is one of Bangkok's unforgetable images when viewed
against a magnificient golden sunrise.
King Taksin choose this 17th century temple where located
on the west bank of Chao Phraya River
as his royal temple, when he moved from the old capital, Ayutthaya in
1767.
The Emerald Buddha was housed here after it was recaptured from Laos,
before being moved to Wat Phra Kaeo in 1785.

The main prang (tower)
is 67 metre (220 ft.) high and its base is 234 metre (768 ft.), curcumference.The
Prangs are covered with pieces of porcelain, which Chinese boats coming
to Bangkok used as ballast.

The colourful porcelain used to decorate the prangs was donateed
by local people.
Many small Kinnari (half-bird, half-human) coves were decorated on
the second level of the main prang.
